Period Map of Locale...

The neighborhood in foreground is now gone. New Chambers Street (gone) was the eastern extension of Chambers Street. It ran in the same line as Chambers Street from Park Row southeast to the intersection of Cherry Street and James Street (today the SW corner of Public School 126).

Oak Street (gone) extended west from from Catherine Street in nearly the same trajectory as Monroe Street.

The Elevated Railway on New Bowery (now St. James Place) is visible at mid-scene.
